“Pilates is designed to give you suppleness, natural grace, and skill that will be unmistakably reflected in the way you walk, in the way you play, and in the way you work.”   ~ Joseph H. Pilates

The Pilates Method is an approach in mind and body integration created by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s.  Its fundamental principles focus on balance, concentration, control, centered awareness, fluid movements, and breath.  Performed as a mat class or on specialized equipment using springs for resistance, Pilates enhances core strength that increases flexibility, coordination and spatial awareness.

Because it engages the whole person, not just the muscles, Pilates is
the ideal form of exercise for everybody from athletes to mothers, as
it develops and enhances stamina, posture, alignment and core strength to better perform everyday activities.

The Pilates Premise

The Pilates method promotes uniform development of the body by
developing weaker muscles instead of having the body continuously rely on its stronger muscles to do the work.  Pilates focuses on the core muscles first, specifically stomach, butt and back to achieve and
maintain a balanced aligned body.

The Benefits of Pilates

  • Elongates muscles without building bulk
  • Slims problem areas, i.e., hips, buttocks and thighs
  • Strengthens the back by building support in the abdominals
  • Increases flexibility while building strength
  • Improves posture, coordination, circulation and overall health
  • Lowers risk of injury by eliminating tension and stress on joints,
    back, and neck
  • Increases better range of motion
  • Promotes relaxation and a sense of well being

Who was Joseph Pilates?

Originally from Germany, Joseph Pilates was a sickly child who dedicated his life to getting physically stronger.  A student of body-building, yoga and gymnastics, he was by age 14 fit enough to pose for anatomical charts. Later an accomplished skier, diver, gymnast and boxer, Pilates believed that the "modern" life-style, bad posture, and inefficient breathing lay at the roots of poor health.
While interned in England during World War I, he became a nurse and designed exercise apparatus for immobilized patients by attaching springs to hospital beds.  This formed the foundation for his style of body conditioning and specialized exercise equipment, which he brought to his NYC studio in 1926.

Currently, the Pilates Method is used worldwide by individuals at all levels of fitness, from dancers and athletes to members at private health clubs and gyms.
